Abstract

This study presents a quantitative and comprehensive analysis investigating the impact of political parties on the political development of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, utilizing theories from political sociology as its theoretical framework. The research focuses on how various dimensions of political parties—such as structure, ideology, performance, inter-party relations, and popular base—affect key indicators of political development, including institutionalization, political participation, civil liberties, the rule of law, and the growth of civil society. Data were collected through a stratified random sample of (384) citizens across the four governorates of the Kurdistan Region. Using multiple linear regression analysis, it was found that party performance has the strongest positive impact on political development (total effect = 0.48), followed by the social base of the parties (total effect = 0.41). Meanwhile, Path Analysis revealed that relations with the federal government of Iraq play a significant mediating role between the influence of political parties and political development. Geographical differences were also observed in the results, with Erbil governorate recording the highest levels and Halabja governorate the lowest on most indicators of political development. Ultimately, this study emphasizes that enhancing the responsiveness of parties to public demands and strengthening their popular bases are two key factors for advancing political development in the Kurdistan Region. This work contributes to a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics between political parties and the process of political development in post-conflict regions transitioning towards democracy.
