Islam From The Perspective Of Martin Luther

Abstract

Martin Luther was an author, University professor, Theology expert, religious man, and the founder of Protestantism. He was one of the most influential thinkers in sixteen century Europe. One Luther’s name is mentioned, and the resistance towards the Pop and Catholicism reforming is recalled. Martin Luther’s ideas and treatises are highly discussed. The current study investigates Islam from Luther’s perspective. The main aim of the study is to demonstrate Luther’s understanding and evaluation of Islam as one of the major religions in the world. To arrive at a solid conclusion, Luther’s writings are examined, and the research also attempts to justify the factors that led Luther to formulate a certain understanding of Islam. The research found that as Islam was approaching Vienna in 1529, Luther realizes the danger that is imposed by Islam and started to promote the danger of attacks through books and public speeches. In addition, the research found that Luther was thinking that Pope and Christian institutions are paving the way to Islamic invasions and he believes that the Ottoman Empire has potential to destroy the Christian Kingdoms.
