The Role of Music And Song in Cultural Events in the Koya

Abstract

This research explores the role of music and song in the cultural events commonly observed in the Koya region. The study aims to highlight the significant influence of music and singing on the cultural identity of the region. Using a qualitative methodology based on the Harvard referencing style, the research focuses on a sample specific to the Koya city area. This study contributes to the field of music anthropology and offers an artistic perspective on cultural practices. We propose that, in addition to being included in higher education curricula, music anthropology should be introduced—at least to some extent—in primary and secondary education to help preserve a sense of national culture among younger generations. The research investigates which cultural events in Koya are influenced by music and song and examines the reasons behind their decline. The findings indicate that many cultural events, particularly religious ones, differ between Islamic and Christian traditions. However, these events are gradually disappearing due to the fading of traditional practices and socio-political changes. The study concludes that music and song play a crucial role in shaping cultural events in the Koya region and that Koya holds a prominent position in cultural, musical, social, religious, political, and economic .contexts
